Book Review: Frigid by J. Lynn

Frigid by J. Lynn

Kyler has always put Syd on a pedestal that was too high for him to reach. To him, she's perfect and she's everything. But the feelings he has for her, he's always hidden away or focused on any other female. After all, Kyler will always be the poor boy from the wrong side of tracks, and Syd will always be the one girl he can never have.

But when they're stranded together at a posh ski resort due to a massive Nor'easter, there's nothing stopping their red-hot feelings for each other from coming to the surface. Can their friendship survive the attraction? Better yet, can they survive at all? Because as the snow falls, someone is stalking them, and this ski trip may be a life-changer in more ways than one.

Frigid was my first JLA read. I knew that she had a huge fan base, so I was interested to try one of her books. And when I was able to borrow this when for a few days -- and even though it is winter themed -- I knew I had a winner.

The Story.

Frigid is an easy read that swept me in quickly. The story of two best friends that are forced to finally come to terms with their feelings is always a winner. It builds a relationship that already has a foundation of trust. Kyler and Syd have an awesome friendship that easily wom my heart over.

The Sweetness factor?

Kyler was so incredible sweet to her. Thinking of the little things, like bringing her a drink or making sure she was safe. The steamy scenes were, well *blushes* definitely fits into the New Adult scene well.

Okay, but what annoyed you?

They were best friends but it was like they did not know how to communicate with each other or 'read' each other. And I know they were exploring new territory with feelings now involved, but at times I just wanted to shake them. You know how each other thinks. Ahhh..even with this irking me slightly --- I did still enjoyed the read.

The added dab of suspense gave the story more dimensions. It was no longer a story about two college kids stuck in a cabin -- no they had to survive the storm and whoever is stalking them.

HEA?

(Highlight here) --> Yeah. There is so major conflict towards the end of the book, but Sydney and Kyler's relationship pulls through.

I'm glad this was my first J. Lynn read. It was sweet, fun, and had a plot going on other than pure romance.

Waiting On Wednesday #3: Crash into You by Katie McGarry + QuickView

This meme is hosted by Breaking the Spine.

Isaiah has secrets, too. About where he lives, and how he really feels about Rachel. The last thing he needs is to get tangled up with a rich girl who wants to slum it on the south side for kicks-no matter how angelic she might look.

But when their shared love of street racing puts both their lives in jeopardy, they have six weeks to come up with a way out. Six weeks to discover just how far they'll go to save each other.

I am dying to get my hands on this book. It has so many things that I love in a book: rich girl, rough side of the tracks boy, protective older brothers, racing, tattoos, secrets, and an amazing cover. Isaiah just may be my favorite charcter from this series (though Noah is up there). Seriously, I'm ready for Isaish to have his HEA!

Expected publication: November 26th 2013 by Harlequin Teen

And....

Quick View of Crossing the Line (Pushing The Limits 1.5):

Crossing the Line was a cute, short romance. McGarry, as to be expected, created a great couple with a little bit of angst. I am glad that Lila got a story.

Even though the book was short, I was drawn in and enjoyed the plot . And I found myself highlighting (I've a kindle) a lot of quotes that I liked.

The book was wrote from both Lila and Lincoln's POV. It was sweet and at 67 pages, I was happy with the ending.

Hopefully, it'll tied me over till the third (and the one I'm most excited for) Isaiah 's book.

Top Ten Tuesday: beginning and endings

This meme is hosted by Broke and Bookish.

This week was all about our favorite beginnings and endings.

I'm not really sure if these are my TOP favorite. They're just some of the first few that came to mind and that I really like. I'm sure I've forgot some...

Anyway, here's my Top Ten list for beginning and ending scenes.

Beginnings

---------

“When I stepped out into the bright sunlight, from the darkness of the movie house, I had only two things on my mind: Paul Newman and a ride home...”

"In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit."

"In my younger and more vulnerable years my father gave me some advice that I’ve been turning over in my mind ever since. Whenever you feel like criticising any one, he told me, just remember that all the people in this world haven’t had the advantages that you’ve had.”

"Once there were four children whose names were Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy."

“Our story has three parts: a beginning, a middle, and an end. And although this is the way all stories unfold, I still can't believe that ours didn't go on forever."

Endings

---------

(May contain spoilers)

"I'd always welcomed war, but when the last battle ends, what life is left for a warrior?"

“If you stay, I'll do whatever you want. I'll quit the band, go with you to New York. But if you need me to go away, I'll do that, too. I was talking to Liz and she said maybe coming back to your old life would be too painful, that maybe it'd be easier for you to erase us. And that would suck, but I'd do it. I can lose you like that if I don't lose you today. I'll let you go. If you stay.”

"Be careful with the world, or the next time we meet, it might get ugly"

"But instead I stay where I am and stare up at the moon as well. And for the briefest instant, it almost feels like we're together again.”

“Grace,” I said, very softly. “Say something.” Sam,” she said, and I crushed her to me.”

There you have it! What beginnings and endings did y'all pick?

My teaser:
"Keep your voices low," he whispered. "And don't make any loud splashes or sudden movements. The water keeps them at bay, but they'll still hunt us."
--Bloodrose by Andrea Cremer (p. 197)
This is the third and final book in the Nightshade series. The second book was amazing, so it didn't take me long to dive into this book. I'm almost finish with Bloodrose and I'm starting to get nervous about how this series is going to end. (If you're curious, check back soon for my thoughts and a review).

Calla has always welcomed war.

But now that the final battle is upon her, there's more at stake than fighting. There's saving Ren, even if it incurs Shay's wrath. There's keeping Ansel safe, even if he's been branded a traitor. There's proving herself as the pack's alpha, facing unnamable horrors, and ridding the world of the Keepers' magic once and for all. And then there's deciding what to do when the war ends. If Calla makes it out alive, that is. In this remarkable final installment of the Nightshade trilogy, international bestselling author Andrea Cremer crafts a dynamic novel with twists and turns that will keep you breathless until its final pages.

Book Review: Wolfsbane by Andrea Cremer

Calla Tor wakes up in the lair of the Searchers, her sworn enemy, and she's certain her days are numbered. But then the Searchers make her an offer–one that gives her the chance to destroy her former masters and save the pack–and the man–she left behind. Is Ren worth the price of her freedom? And will Shay stand by her side no matter what? Now in control of her own destiny, Calla must decide which battles are worth fighting and how many trials true love can endure and still survive.

Initial Thoughts: Where's the 3rd Book?!
I would be so mad right now if the third book wasn't already sitting on my shelf. I HAVE to find out what happens (though finale books always make me nerves too...am I alone in this?) and quick! This definetly ends on a cliff hanger so you might want to have the third book near.

Wolfsbane > Nightshade
Okay, I enjoyed Nightshade. But Wolfsbane kicked everything to a new level. It was absolutely amazing, and one of my favorite books this year.
The beginning was interesting and introduced us to a lot of new characters. We find Calla with the Searchers. I loved getting to know the different members of the searcher team. The charcters pop and their personalities show a lot of development. Here, she learns a lot about herself and her past. This part isn't necessarily slow (the writing flows well), but their isn't tons of action.

The second half though. Bam. Action packed. And I loved every minute. Once I got halfway through, I could hardly put it down for any length of time. Every page and chapter was like a whirlwind with something new happening. Different actions scenes mixed with emotional twist had me on the edge of my seat. At times, I had to know what happened next, but wasn't sure if I was able to read it. It made me nervous to know what was going to happen next, but I couldn't look away.

And a couple twist definitely caught me by surprise. I love it when I don't see a twist coming (cause I usually do) -- it really sucks you into the book more.

What of that pesky love Triangle??? (Go Team Ren)

If you've read Book I then you know that this book contains a love triangle. If you absolutely hate that -- then don't pick up this book. However, I'm not huge on the love triangle thing, and this one drew me in. I was Team Ren from the start. And even at the end of this book, I am still routing for Ren. I like how the author kept both angles open in this book though. Calla ends up spending a lot more time with Shay in this book, but I appreciated the thought of Ren (and how that all eventually played out was *gasp*, that's one of the things that got me).

Other Random Stuff:

--The magical parts were described very well (I totally want to be a Weaver).

--Cremer writing style flows well and draws you in; along with her actions/fight scenes being wrote so you feel like you're there.

--Calla is a tough heroine who even says that she doesn't need anyone to save her. She's BA and the boss -- I love that!

--All the twist and turns were perfect!

Favorite Character: Conner. He was always himself. It didn't matter who he was talking to, he was the same self-assured, cracking jokes, easy going guy. Plus, he can fight and I love that he has a soft spot for Adne.

Final Thoughts: 5 Stars

I have library books due back soon, but I think I'm going to have to pluck Bloodrose off of my shelf first. I have to know what happens with all the action between the Keepers and Searchers, and of course which boy Calla finally choses (*crosses fingers for Ren*) -- come on, Bloodrose don't let me down.

Seriously, I put this book off for a while cause Nightshade was just alright. I cannot believe I waited so long, because this book was amazing! Give it a chance if you haven't, especially if you like magic, action, and a dab of romance.

Book Review: I'm Not Her

I'm Not Her by

“For the first time in my life, I didn’t feel envy…”

Tess is the exact opposite of her beautiful, athletic sister. And that’s okay. Kristina is the sporty one, Tess is the smart one, and they each have their place. Until Kristina is diagnosed with cancer. Suddenly Tess is the center of the popular crowd, everyone eager for updates. There are senior boys flirting with her. Yet the smiles of her picture-perfect family are cracking and her sister could be dying. Now Tess has to fill a new role: the strong one. Because if she doesn’t hold it together, who will?

I'm Not Her is an emotional read. Seriously, my emotions were all over when I was reading this -- angry, sad, bitter, chuckling, and even at times "crushing" on the bad boy. But, everything, is flavored by the impending events that is mentioned in the first pages.

It is not a easy, fun read but it is a raw and powerful one

Kristina is sick. Perfect, beautiful, popular and sporty Kristina has bone cancer. And suddenly Kristina's seemingly happy life goes from fabulous to wretched. She does not want her friends to know she is sick, especially the other girls on her volleyball team. She is no longer outgoing but extremely depressed.

Tess was never in the spotlight and she liked it that way. She just wanted her freshman year to be about focusing on her art and getting into the honor's society with her best friend. That all changes when her sister gets sick.

Suddenly everyone knows who she is and her name, even if she dosen't want them to or not. She is trying to deal with her sister's friends, older boys, juggling her life as a freshman, lying for her sister, keeping her family together, and entering her art in a contest.

Now, her life consist of being in the spotlight and sacrificing things for her sister. Because her sister cannot be that person anymore.

At times, I was extremely angry with the characters in this books. Like wanted to smack them angry -- however, it made me realize something: that I was angry because the character's were angry. My anger was based on how the MC, Tess, was seeing the world and feeling. And so I was feeling that way too -- and when a book can so openly portray those feelings across the pages, you know it is powerful.

Gurtler's writing is realistic and very honest.

She did not take the easy way out, but allowed her characters to get angry, get depressed, live in denial, and so forth. It represented a family effected by cancer and how it changes the whole family unit. Cancer often effects the whole community (especially if the person is more well known), and the family often puts on a brave face for those looking in. The community does not always see the real problems and fears the family is facing. Gurtler exposes the real stresses and battles of a 'supportive family' and how each person deals with the cancer.

I'm Not Her is a heavy-issued read. It shows a family faltering and learning to rise again -- not matter how long it takes. Well written, emotional, and heart-felt, pick this book up if you're looking for those things...you wont regret it.

Q: Book Vacay: Where is the best destination reading spot for you? (Where do you like to go to read other then your home)

A: My absolute favorite place to read is at the beach. Chair at the edge of the water, feet in the sand, ocean breeze blowing, and a good book equals peace and happiness.

Let's all sigh together on three...one...two...three....*sigh* Paradise.

a hammock is pretty nice too. And a lot cheaper.
