Book Review: Waiting on the Sidelines by Ginger Scott

Waiting on the Sidelines (Waiting on the Sidelines #1) by Ginger Scott

Review:

This book will transport you straight back to your high school days. And remind you how difficult the 'food chain' of popularity really can be, and the challenge of finding yourself and coming into your own during highschool.

Nolan is a tomboy. She lives in her older brothers hand-me down clothes and loves her well worn pair of converse. Reed, who is the school's new 'famous' quarterback, has money, status and legacy. When the two are assigned to work together for a project, they slowly begin forming a friendship.

Nolan is pushed into a new world of mean girls, bitchy girlfriends, being one of the guys, high school crushes, first loves, and knowing where you stand among everything. And it is amazing (and potentially tear-jerking at times) to see how she responds and rises, and forms from shy kid to confident young woman.

One key thing I could say about this story: Relatable. That is what makes Nolan and Reed's story so fantastic. And believable. It helps you remember your own high school days, crushing on that certain guy, dealing with friendships and mean girls. I grew up in a small town (and in a trailer) like Nolan, and I love how that never stopped her. Not only this, but many times, I found myself comparing this to my own high school experience and found it eerily familiarly.

If you are looking for a slow building romance this story is for you. It follows Nolan and Reed over the four high school years, and even though at times you want to beat some sense into each of them, you'll be pulling for this characters from the start. Even though this story is a slow build, it is exactly appropriate for this realistic genre. You follow Nolan through her struggles and successes. If you are looking for a fast instalove sorta story, then this story isn't for you. But if you are ready to slow down, meet the characters, enjoy their friendship, remember your own first love, and savor every page then this is the story for you.
