5 Stars

Nursing school was going full force and this book still had me glued
to the pages. Don’t worry I still passed the semester, but sad to say I am just
now getting to this review months later. To keep it short and sweet, let me say that Ride Steady
was one of my favorite books that I read in 2015.

Two of my favorite things: KA and Motorcycle clubs. You cannot go wrong with that. Ride Steady shows Queen Kristen Ashely doing
what she does best writing great likeable heroines and sexy alpha males. And
really do I need to say more than that? If you like either or both of those
above mentioned, then you’ll love Ride Steady.

Carson and Carissa attend the same high school. They both seem interested in
each other, but never get past social statues, other relationships and peers,
and home life in order to date. Yet this
lays a great foundation for the couple down the road. I love these kind of relationships.

The book takes place years later and both characters have
changed. Carissa is a strong as ever and a single mother. When she gets
stranded on the side of a busy road, Carson pulls up to save her. Carson
recognizes her instantly. Carissa does
not recognize the rough, tatted man on a motorcycle called Joker. To show her
appreciation for helping, Carissa brings baked goods to the MC clubhouse. And from there the two are again drawn to
each other, even though they both are apprehensive about the relationship.

Another favorite topic of mine is single moms as I grew up
in a single parent household, and KA does it justice in this book. Carissa is strong, smart, and would do
anything for the child she adores. And I melt almost every time that Joker goes
into baby mode.

Along with the attraction and budding romance, this book
brings some action with it too. MC Chaos are in rough times, and we even get to
see some of our favorites from the Dream Man and (eeeep!) Lee Nightingale.

I enjoyed every stolen minute with this book. KA does not disappoint
from the action to the romance to friendships to the very sweet family moments.
Loved watching Carissa and Joker work through their past and fight the future.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Maybe Matt’s Miracle was a quick, sweet look back into the lives of the Reeds.

Matt, like the rest of the Reed brothers, is kind hearted, tattooed, and oh so sugary sweet. He’s recovering from cancer and the bitter betrayal of two close friends, when he meets Sky. He works with his brothers at the tattoo shop, and knows Sky’s nieces and nephew through their mom Kendra. Kendra and Matt were friends during cancer treatment.

Sky is a lawyer in a dead-end relationship. She cannot stand her father, and her mother insults her or ignores her. This makes her bitter and hurt. Even so, she wants to please them so she becomes a lawyer. And when Sky’s dad approaches her asking her to take care of her half-sisters kids, Sky cannot refuse. Sky who was planning on having a nice things and a “respectable” life and job, is suddenly tossed into the chaos and love of single-motherhood. And along with that unexpectedly comes a tall, handsome, and tattooed man.

Loved the aspect that the kids brought to this book. Each of the children in Sky’s care brought their own dynamic. And I loved scenes between Sky, Matt, and the kids. I wanted more though. A lot could have been fluffed out a little more (says me, lover of fluff) and lot of different angst could have been explored or delved into. However, this book is short and covers a lot considering the page numbers are limited. Simply put, I wanted more.

Matt and Sky’s relationship moves fast. And fans of the series will be excited to know that Matt even gets a bloody nose. I always enjoy how the author works that into different books. Matt and Sky’s relationship is tender and sizzling. In fact, true to form, this books features a lot of sizzling bedroom activity. Matt has some alpha tendencies that I usually enjoyed and even some had me rolling my eyes (pff, men, amiright? ;p). Matt was incredible sweet to Sky and the kids and wanted to help take care of them, which makes you love him even more.

The other brothers are there, and one of my favorite parts of the book is when the whole family is together goofing off. This is a Fun, heartwarming story. And if you’re fans of the Reeds anyway, you’ll love love love Matt’s story. The ending destroyed my heart…but in a great way. Can’t wait to get my hands on Paul’s book next.

Thanks to NetGalley and Night Shift Publishing for providing this copy in exchange for an honest review.

This series was my first taste of Kristen Proby. And I must
say I really enjoyed these books. Falling for Jillian is my favorite out of the
ones I have read. These are standalone romances, but the other characters make
a lot of appearances. I mean the main character Zack has a twin brother – how could
they both not make an appearance? King
twins = gold.

And they both are alpha, protective, and super sweet.

Zack King has returned from the army to take care of his son,
which his ex-wife abandoned on his brother’s doorstep while he was gone. Jill
has moved back into town to get away from her horrible ex-husband and to start
fresh. After a quick one night fling
from the last time she was in town, Zack and Jill cannot help be awkward around
each other. Avoidance is key.

Even if the flame and tension still dances hot when they are
around each other. The joys of having a similar friend set, am I right?

That is until a huge snow storm hit Montana, and Jill is
without heat. She calls her best friend to rescue her. Cara is with both the
King twins at the time of the call. Worried for Jill, Zack has to step up to and
save Jill. Figuring that her heater
cannot be fixed at least till after the storm, Zack insist that Jill return
with him to the ranch. The RANCH! What a perfect setting for this charming and
sweet winter romance.

I wish I could have read it closer to Christmas time, but
the winter weather around her was enough to really drive the setting home. And I think I want to move to Montana now.

As Zack and Jill get closer, Jill also gets to know Zack’s
twelve year old son, Seth. And she slowly
begins to feel a connection and protective motherly instinct over the boy who
has had a rough past. Seth is still
struggling to accept that he is away from his horrible mother and learning that
his family cares for him. Zack is dealing with his young teenage son and the return
from war. And Jill is carrying around a lot of baggage of her own. It is not easy
sailing for this group.

I would describe this book as smooth and direct. I loved how
well each chapter flowed and how easily it was to read. The characters do
connect quickly and easily with each other. And even though there is conflict
it was smoothed over well. My only wish as a reader, was that I could have seen
a little more tension/emotional turmoil with each character. Like Zack
struggles with PTSD from the war, but it is barely touched on.

But overall enjoyed the character connections, especially
seeing Seth and Zack interact. Jill was a strong, stubborn character that I
feel many women can relate with. Plus, I really enjoyed her feisty kick butt
side.

I had heard that these books were a bit corny. Knowing that
going in, I felt like corny was too strong of a word. These books: makes you
smile a lot, reads super easy, presents conflicts but wraps it up well, and make
you love the characters. I really enjoyed
the sticky, sweet fluff of goodness. I will definitely be picking up more
Kristen Proby books soon!

Four "Love the Merrick brothers" StarsLove the elemental series!

First just let me say if you enjoy paranormal books, then you have to try this YA series!

Just stop, drop, and roll on over to book 1 in the series, Strom (my review here). You will not be disappointed.

Michael has always looked out for those around him. When this includes his own younger brothers, Hunter, his girlfriend Hanna and her little boy, Michael feels overwhelmed. This is because he is not just trying to help them from day to day life, he is also trying to keep them safe from the Guides coming to town. Even if it means making sacrifices. When the threats are carried out, and even appear at their own front door – Michael knows something has to change.

Only as Michael tries to protect those around him, he pushes them away. And instead of bringing justice to his family, those in the community begin to think it is a little to convenient that Michael is always at the scene of the crime. Unable to explain the reason behind everything, Michael finds himself in even more trouble with the community. Especially the fire marshal who is Hannah's father.

I have described these books as The Outsiders merge with Captain Planet…and that is probably the reason I love them so. The supernatural elemental brings a lot of action to the plot. While The Outsiders component gets to the heart of the characters and the bonds of brothers. Which always gets me right in the heart too. However, the brothers were lacking a lot in this book. The moments that they were all together warmed my heart, and were probably some of my favorite parts of the book. Yet, Michael does not take any lessons from his brothers’ (or Hunter’s) books and tries to take on the Guides (and problems) himself. This really frustrated me because I knew it was the last book, and I wanted a lot of Merrick bonding moments.

Adam, Tyler, and especially Hunter played a major role in these books. And since I love all of these characters, I was really excited to see them. But some grim moments take place in this book, and it made me wonder where in the world were Becca and Layne. Also, Hannah was the first Merrick girlfriend/boyfriend that I did not absolutely love. And I really liked her appearances in the other books, and she grew on me here, but she also frustrated me a lot.

The writing was face paced, and flowed perfectly with the plot. And true to Brigid Kemmerer form the characters were fleshed out and relatable. She really has a talent for making all her characters pop off the page. And as always she never shies away from facing the big problems, the big moments, or the big plot twists. And she always can get to the emotion of the problem and make your heart break with the characters

The end of series always make me nervous. And I knew that reading about my favorite Merrick brother wouldn’t be any different. I knew something b-i-g was about to happen, but I did not see it actually coming till a few moments before. And ack, it was a huge plot twist moment.

The ending made the series complete, but I wanted more. More explanations, more brothers interacting, and maybe just maybe an epilogue! Too much was left unanswered for me to actually feel like the series was wrapped up. Seriously, even a little novella now with a few months down the road would make my day! So this book finished everything up, and it was nice to be in Michael Merrick’s head. There was a lot of action and some heart crushing scenes, and all and all I enjoyed the finale. The ending is a bit abrupt, but then again Brigid Kemmerer covered all the bases and left me wanting more! So really I cannot complain too much.

It was going to be a three star read for me, but because of my general love for the Merrick’s and for some really great moments in the book and the awesome writing– I bumped it to four stars.
Not a bookish post. Or even a post about how nursing school has been my life this past semester.

Ruthless People (Ruthless People #1) by J.J. McAvoy

“Every last person we kill is for family. If we do not kill
them, they kill us. It’s the way of the world. It is self-defense.”

Melody Giovanni and Liam Callahan are both mafia bosses. They both are heartless, cruel, crime bosses.
They do not take no for answer, tolerate disrespect, or let anyone stand in
their way. If something does not work out the way they plan, it is nothing for
them to kill or kill and torture those who stand in the way of the “family
business.” Ruthless People comes with a warning. Melody
and Liam are cruel – ruthless – people. And it did not really bother me. But the
warning is there for a reason, and there were a couple of moments throughout
the book that I thought was completely heartless and upsetting. And I was not
sure how realistic some of their dealings with the law/cops actually could
be.

Their fathers arrange for them to be married so that they two
families can join together and become more powerful, and stop the bloodshed
between them. Liam is use to women being the “face” of the family, donating to
charity, spending the money, keeping the men happy, and not get involved with
the dirty work. So when he sees gorgeous Melody, he cannot wait for her to be
that woman. Until, he actually meets her and discovers that she is just as cold
and tough as him. And that she cannot be pushed around. In fact, she was quite
deadly just like him.

She looks like a sweet little lamb from afar, but when you
get close, you find out she skinned and ate the damn thing just to use it as a
coat. She’s a beast.

The boss in each of them battles for the supreme power, each
one trying to top the last and prove that they can lead their now merged family.
And they could not be told what to do. I loved how strong Melody’s character
was. She did not go guy crazy, and there was no way that she was going to lay
down and be a doormat. Not only does she
earn the respect of her men, but she holds her own with Liam.

Liam, soon-to-be-fucking-dead, Callahan was walking down the
stairs—my fucking stairs—with his sex hair high and his green eyes sharper than
razor blades. He was beautiful, and I almost regretted the fact that I would
have to put a bullet in his head and then smash it through a fucking wall.

When they finally realized that they could get more done by
working together instead of fighting, they slowly beginning working out things
together. This book is almost broken into three parts: the pre-wedding, the
actual wedding, and then post wedding. I enjoy the events leading up the
wedding the most, but once they learned to start working together they become
almost untouchable. Liam and Melody slowly start trusting and having feelings for
each other. Much to Liam’s joy, who wants a marriage like his father and mother’s,
and to Melody’s disdain. Melody does not like the idea of trusting anyone. And
this is what the last part of the book focuses on more.

“I am trying! You are closer to me that anyone else Liam.”

I have not read many mafia themed books, but the characters
in this book seemed to be spot on. They gave the outside world the good face
while they were handling the underbelly of the city the way they wanted. And
both Melody and Liam were clear that Chicago was their city. They called the
shots. Along with controlling the city, they also dealing
with the Russians who are stirring up a lot of problems.

The ending ends on a bit of bitter note and a cliffhanger.
However, I was overall pleased how the author closed the first chapter for
these two characters. This is one of the
most unique books that I have read in a long time. It brings raw feelings,
powerful heroine, and a fresh spin on romance.

Where Darkness Lies by Bella Jewel

Where Darkness Lies reminded me why I love Bella Jewel so
much. The characters were flawed, but loveable, and
the plot was fast paced and action packed.

The characters Dimitri and Jess were both struggling with past
demons. After a hard childhood, Jess is running. She is smart, coolheaded,
beautiful, and loyal to her friends. A
vast ocean is the perfect place to hide, and a group of pirates as friends make
for one of the safest places. Until,
Dimitri finally catches up with his step father, craving revenge. Dimitri abducts Jess in hopes of hurting
Hendrix and learning his weakness. Dimitri is cold, tough, bitter, and incredibly
handsome. Using his rage, he hates all things pirates including Hendrix and now
Jess.

Only Jess is frustratingly not afraid of Dimitri. In fact,
she makes for the worse captive because she is witty, incredibly loyal to
Hendrix, and not afraid to voice her opinions. And neither of them can seem to
fight the growing attraction to each other, especially when they begin seeing
that their past are more similar then they could have imagined.

And when I say action packed, I mean a lot happens in this
book. All most too much, another scene
that I had forgot just popped into my head just now, but each plot point
brought the characters together. And I really enjoy those moments…. a lot. And the romance was perfect in my opinion,
sweet and tender in just the right moments.

Bella Jewel delivers a great companion to Enslaved by the
Ocean. The right amount of steam and plot, mixed with a huge dose of
action. This book was classic Bella
Jewel, so if you enjoyed the first in this series or the MC sinners series,
then you will likely love this too. Where
Darkness Lies could be read as a standalone or out of order for the first,
Enslaved by the Ocean. It has been
almost a year exactly since I read Enslaved by the Ocean, and even though it
gives a lot of background it is not necessary to enjoying the plot of Where
Darkness Lies. But trust me on this, you’ll want to meet Hendrix.

Summary (from Goodreads):

Georgie

I lie to survive.

Have since I was sixteen and my world fell into chaos. But I found a way to endure, or rather it found me. Now I’m a prisoner of my own doing, hiding behind a false mask so no one sees the truth. Not even the man I want but can’t have—Deck. But I messed up and the lies are spilling over, out of control.

Deck is unrelenting and will settle for nothing less than the truth. He demands everything from me—EVERYTHING—even if it rips me apart.

DECK

I kill for a living.

Unyielding—It’s how I survive in my line of work. I bend people to my will…except Georgie.
But that ends now.
I've played her game for far too long. Now I think it's time we play mine.

4 Stars
Perfect Chaos is a spin-off series of the Tear Asunder series. When I heard that Deck, Georgie, Kai, and London were all getting a book too, I was ecstatic. So much was going on in the Torn from You (Tear Asunder #1) with these characters, that I knew this new series was going to be an amazing ride.

And Perfect Chaos was just that, intense, dark, romantic and lots of gorgeous, alpha Deck (hello, beautiful cover).

”Don’t let me fall asleep,” I whispered.
“It’s safe to sleep, Georgie. You’re always safe with me.”

Georgie falls into a dark world at the young age of sixteen. She learns to first to endure and then how to survive. As she gets older, she learns to hide her true self behind all of the chaos.

Deck is an ex-military badass who now works for himself. The most Georgie knows about him is that he has an equally badass team, and they use their resources to catch and kill evil people. He is the definitely an alpha male and has no trouble letting Georgie know how things should or should not be.

They have known each other for years, Deck always keeping an annoying close eye on Georgie. And always pulling her out of bars or stepping in when he deems a guy unfit for her. Georgie cannot stand that Deck gets close enough to boss her around, but never wants to cross any relationship lines.

Deck is tired of always having to pull Georgie out of trouble and decides he needs to put an end to the chaos. But as he starts to get to the root of the problems with Georgie, he begins unraveling more than he ever expected. And as her secrets come to the light some of his deeply buried ones begin to follow.

“Shoot anything that moves.”
“What if it’s you?”
“You won’t shoot me.”
“How can you be so sure?”
“You won’t shoot me.”
“But I could if you surprised me and --,”
“Then don’t be surprised.”

Nashoda Rose kept me on my toes with Perfect Chaos and I loved that she did. The plot twists caught me off guard. Every time I thought I had everything figured out, it would flip or thicken. And I was back at square one wondering what exactly was going on. With each twist, the plot darkens a little more. I would not say this is for the faint of heart, just because some serious problems the characters are facing (including references and moments of torture).

Besides intense moments and mega-badass men, this book also had a good amount of emotional and heartbreaking moments, and of course some sexy time. The story is told from Deck and Georgie’s POV, so we get a look into both of their minds and drives along with hints of their secrets.

“Without your colors, I’m just a man living in the dark.”

Perfect Chaos had me quickly turning the pages trying to figure out what was happening. The intensity and emotion made for a compelling read. We get to see some of the characters from Tears Asunder, which was great addition. The book ends on a cliffy though, and I cannot wait to get a hold of book number two.

Thanks to NetGalley and the author for providing this copy in exchange for an honest review. Quotes are taking from the ARC version and are subject to change upon publication.Jennahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16248676055912623718noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-954850228127239275.post-73270960144861162072014-11-01T13:03:00.001-07:002014-11-01T13:03:51.371-07:00November, hi!

Posted with Blogsy
Jennahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16248676055912623718noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-954850228127239275.post-77899305782635405202014-10-23T11:29:00.001-07:002014-10-23T11:33:08.658-07:00Review and Blog Tour: Reaper's Stand by Joanna Wylde

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Pic’s story! Yay!

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Again… Joanna Wylde knows how to write a badass, intense MC
book.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">And I would expect nothing less for the Reaper’s Prez,
Picnic.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Picnic may be in charge of the Reaper’s MC, but that does
not change the fact that he misses his deceased wife. He can be a good father
to his girls, but the idea of patching another old lady is out of the
question.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">London has been the cleaning lady for the club’s pawn shop
for a while. Picnic cannot seem to deny the attraction he feels for her. So
when she ends up at the club armory looking for her younger cousin -- so she can
drag her home before she gets into real trouble -- Pic cannot resist offering
her a deal in exchange for his help.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">When London agrees to clean his personal house, she battles
her own intense attraction for this dominate, scary man.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">And Pic is just that: controlling, hard, and scary. But London also begins to see that he is
passionate, a good father, caring, and cannot seem to shake these building feeling.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">But when things start spiraling out of control (majorly out of control), London has
some really hard choices to make.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">London is loyal. She cares for her niece as if she were her
own daughter and would do anything to protect her. She also has a big heart as she
easily accepts another young girl that needs a place to live into her home. However, she makes some stupid decisions. Why, London, why?! Even though I write
“why” wonder if I wouldn’t have done the same. She was between a rock and hard place. Yet, she has a fierceness and
drive about her that helps redeem her.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">And this is the point where the book when from gritty, to straight out
dark.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I was not expecting this shift. And it had me battling
internally about character reactions. For a lack of a better word, it was
intense. Very. Joanna Wylde handled each character’s response beautifully and
accurately though. Making me not wanting
to look away even though the shit was hitting the fan.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Intense read. Reminded me why I love MC books so stinkin’
much. Loved seeing Pic’s softer side along with
getting a glimpse of his playful and loving self. Though when he was hard and the president of
the MC, it was quiver inducing. Add that to his inner dialogues and we’ve a
great balance of a character.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">It was great that London was an older heroine, especially since
Pic was older as well. It was nice to see a MC president that was attracted to women his own age. It brought a maturity to the story. And it was a lovely change following Em’s and Hunter’s
story, who definitely had their younger moments. (There story is amazing as well. Just a completely different feel).

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Each book in this series has a unique tone. They all have some grit, but each set of
characters bring their own feel to the series. And sometimes I almost forget
that I’ve already read the supporting characters’ stories because I’m seeing
them in a new light/mood, through another character’s eyes. For example, Painter really grew on me this
book, where in the past I found him annoying.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">It was great seeing some of my favorites. Rugger and Horse
make some appearances! And it reminded me how much I love them (and their books,
seriously don’t start with this book. Start at the beginning of the series and
work up. You won’t regret it). And even though I knew Horse was a certified
badass, I was quickly reminded of that again.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This book is dark and defiantly emotional. These are
outlaws, and we get a clear look at the underbelly of a MC club. And Wlyde
brings a truth and authentic feel to what an actual MC club would be like.
Loved the book. Loved Picnic. And London. Love the series. Cannot wait for
more! Hopefully lots and lots more angst, grit, and Harley riding
badasses.

Twisted picks up about two years after Tangled, but from Kate’s
POV. Kate and Drew are of course making a dynamite team at work. However, when
they are faced with a bump in their personal lives, they both react in true
Kate and Drew fashion.

But not all love stories end happily ever after. Did you think Drew and
I were going to ride off into the sunset? Join the club

Angry and hurt, Kate decides that she needs to head back to
Greenville for a few days. Getting to see Kate’s hometown and a look at the
past, helped me understand more of her friendship with Dee Dee and Billy. Especially Billy. Seeing him from Kate’s eyes, instead of Drew’s,
changed the way I thought of him completely.
I actually liked him. And appreciated his sense of humor and the way he
cares for both Kate and Dee Dee.

I enjoyed Tangled a lot and wasn’t sure about reading
Twisted from Kate’s POV. However, I may have ended up actually enjoying Twisted
even more than Tangled. *gasp* I know, I’m one of the few. Kate’s sense of humor was just as great as
Drew’s. She had me cracking up throughout
the whole book. She could openly admit her weaknesses and faults. But she also
worked through them, and gained some independence. And grow past it. And eventually stuck to her guns about the
things she wanted/needed in the future.

Drew still won my heart again. Even though I was angry at
him – and Kate too – he still was the Drew we all love. Seeing him interact with
Mackenzie was incredibly cute. It had me
cracking up during the “where do babies come from” scene. But more than that, I
loved seeing how much Drew really loves Kate. That’s what really won me over.

I wasn’t expecting some harder scenes present in this book, but they
were peppered throughout. Chase did a
great job of mixing the heavier moments with the lighter ones. This was a
fantastic read.

Can’t wait to read Dee Dee’s book. She is a firecracker and
a half, it’s going to be a bucket of laughs!

I'm happy to say that the monster readathon was a success in my book. Though I didn't manage to read a 100 pages everyday or write a review or finish my audiobook, I'm beyond excited about the books that I finished reading. I'm fixing to start nursing school (more about that here) and wanted to get as many books knocked out of the way as possible. Cause I'm about to beyond busy once the middle of this month rolls around. There is no way I want my NetGalley ARCs looming over my head during school. And there is a few books that I've been dying to get my nose in, so I'm hoping to get those read during these challenges too.

Read 100 pages a day

Read at least 1 ARCs

Write 1 review

Read one historical fiction book

Finish listening to my audio book

Here's to getting that NetGalley ratio back in the green. I have five books that I need to read and review. Since this challenge runs all month long, it would be amazing if I could knock out all five books. However, since there is some books that I want to get finished in August that aren't ARCs/reviews -- I'll be tickled pink with three read and reviewed from my NetGalley shelf.

I'm aiming to read & review:

Twisted by Emma Chase

Ruthless People by J.J. McAvoy

Trust by Sherri Hayes

Between the Sheets is my second Molly O'Keefe
book, and it did not let me down. After reading Never Been Kissed (review here) and thoroughly
enjoying all the macho man moments, I couldn’t resist meeting Ty the motorcycle
bad boy.

With a name and cover like Between the Sheets supports, it is
easy to believe the book is just like all the other heavily romanced geared
books. While there is a lot of steam (again, how could there not be?) , this
books dives into some serious heartbreaking emotions.

Shelby and Ty both are faced with these issues, and in
return seek refuge in each other’s arms.

Ty is dealing with a new town, new people, and becoming a
new dad. Only his son isn’t a newborn.

Casey is a troubled elementary school student that recently
tracked his father down. Not only is Casey scarred from his past experiences
with his mother, he’s uncertain that this safe place with Ty will last. Acting out in class to fighting to stealing
the occasional item, Casey doesn’t know how to deal with all these new emotions
colliding with his past.

Ty can’t help but blame himself for all of the pain the boy
has been through. And even though Casey
reminds Ty of himself, he doesn’t know how to reach out to his hurting
son.

Cue, Shelby.

Shelby is the art teacher at Casey’s school. And great with dealing with Casey because she is one of the
few people that Casey actually respects.

Shelby is tough, guarded, and broken. Dealing with a scandal from years past and
with her mother’s worsening dementia, plus teaching at school and the art barn,
Shelby doesn't have time to deal with her sexy new neighbor, Ty. But even so she can't help being attracted to him, and the momentarily distraction from her hectic life that he offers.

Shelby learning to cope with her mother’s dementia was
heartbreaking. And really, spot on. As someone who has worked with dementia
patients, O’Keefe has really researched her topic and has conveyed well all the
emotions of guilt, fear, confusion, and hurt that family members/caregivers deal with on a daily bases.

Ty and Casey’s part of the story was also very moving. In
fact, it was my favorite part of the book. Casey was an excellent character. With moments of growth and heartache, Casey and Ty slowly learn what it means to be father and son.

Yes, there is some romance. But this book showcases more than the lover next door
scenario. It is a heartfelt story of survival. And what happens when you allow those around you to help -- so you don't have to carry the burden alone.

5 Hilarious, Awkward, Honest Stars

A major hit! Laugh out loud funny and relatable.

Ellie is a 21 year old woman in her last year of university,
who drinks at the pubs regularly, goes to parties, and hangs out with her friends.
Like the majority of college students. Only, she’s a virgin. And not by choice. She
is dying to pop the cherry and be able to relate to her peers. Not being able
to giggle about awkward hookups or have the experience to swap great sex stories,
she feels left out the “normal” college crowd and like a freak.

On a mission to finally lose her V-Card, Ellie hilariously journeys
on road to self-discovery. She spares
the reader none as she learns everything from where to put your hands or tongue
for that matter to the benefits (and disadvantages) of waxing the lady bits.
Nothing is off limits.

And that is why this book is so fantastic. We’ve all been
there. Radhika Sanghani wasn’t afraid to boldly and honestly tackle many issues
-- which many authors skim around, sugarcoat, or skip all together -- in all
their glory. And it’s awkward and hilarious,
and actually useful. Seriously, where
was this book when all these question first started popping up in my head?

Ellie is a great character. She has many freakouts and
breakdowns. But she bravely keeps putting one foot in front of another. She
laughs at herself and learns to bounce back.
And even though she feels like it is a horrific to be the only virgin in
a sea of sexual active peers, almost everybody accepts her virginal status
without judgment. Eventually she begins
to see past the goal of just losing her virginity, and learns major life
lessons about growing up, relationships, communication, and friendship.

This book probably isn’t for everyone. But if you – or a
friend – have every cut yourself down there trying to shave, “snogged” a guy
that ended up being gay, used wikipiedia
way too much to answer question that Cosmo won’t even answer, etc. etc., then you’ll be cracking up Ellie
and her friends.

It has been a long time since I have blogged, reviewed a book, or even *gasp* participated in a meme. In fact, I've only jumped over to my blog a few times in the pass few months to drop a NetGalley review down and be on my way. Life -- as I'm sure you can relate -- has kept me slammed. And sadly this blog and book reviews have taken a back burner. Even reading at times has taken a back burner (on that note, I did finally watch the first six seasons of TrueBlood. And mostly loved it. And definitely loved all things Eric. Can't wait for the new season to actually come out on DVD. #endrandomness). Enjoy the following picture :p

Anyway, I wish I could say that my hiatus was about to end. However, I'm afraid the exact opposite is about to happen and I'm about to become even more busy. I got accepted into a local RN program. They've already told us for the next two years that we belong to them. So I have a feeling that this blog and even reading is going to take a major backburner to make way for studying, class, labs and clinicals shove their way to the front of my life with fist flying.

With the few weeks I have left of freedom, I'm trying my best to enjoy life, reading, and family time. And hopefully be a little more active on this blog and connecting with my fellow bloggers. Cause that really is one of the greatest parts of book blogging. Additionally with the last bit of summer, I have this huge list of books that I wanna get finished. (Most of them are actually historical romances which seems to be my new addiction -- more on that soon, well, hopefully :D). It would be great if I could find a read-a-thon or something of the like to help knock off some of these. And also, it would be beyond amazing to get a chunk of my NetGalley books off my mind.

Seven really isn't too bad of a number. I just need to buckle down and get them read.

I know that I want be on here very much once the middle of August rolls around. But you can still find me on Goodreads (here), and hopefully on my personal blog if you're interested. This will most likely contain 2AM rants, random thoughts, and me gushing about my love for pizza (Adventures Abound).
Hope. After the horror of being Ian’s slave for ten months, a fate she never imagined she’d escape, it feels as if she is living a dream. She has freedom she hadn’t expected to have again, and she wakes up every morning not fearing what the day will bring. There is also Stephan. The man who saved her from the daily torture she had to endure at the hands of Ian and his friends. The same man who makes her heart race with just the thought of him. Life is good.

Outside forces are determined to conspire against them, however. When Brianna’s father shows up on her doorstep, it sends her world spiraling out of control. He brings with him new information about how Brianna ended up in Ian’s clutches, but will it make a difference? Will Stephan be able to find a way to make Ian pay for all he made Brianna suffer? As Brianna and Stephan try to find out the truth, their relationship is tested. She is forced to face her past head on, and deal with the ugly reality of what happened to her. Will Stephan’s love be enough to see her through her newest challenge, or will the fragile trust they’ve built come crumbling down around them as the truth makes itself known.

4 Stars

The thing that make this series stand out among the genre is that the BDSM lifestyle is not readily accepted. Not only is Brianna not sure about the lifestyle and becoming Stephan’s submissive, but she actually is afraid of different aspects. Along with that, the people in Stephan’s life are not supportive of his lifestyle choices or with keeping Brianna. Basically, there is no "rose shaded glasses" that made everyone around easily accept the lifestyle. It gave the story a flavor of reality and truth.

Brianna is one amazing character. And if you’ve read my reviews of book one and two, you know that I’m beyond protective of her. Even to the point of being mad at Stephan, the hero, at points. Brianna has grown a lot since Slave. She still has a lot of moments where her past creeps up, but she bravely pushes forward. Brianna and Stephan’s relationships evolve even more during this book, along with their trust for each other. Even though she still has her reservations she always trusts Stephan. Of course, Lily, was as wonderful as ever with being a friend to Brianna. And being able to explain/coach Brianna through different aspects of life and how to deal with Stephan.

Stephan has had his DOM moments in the past books. But this book we got more of an inner glimpse into his desires. Still everything is pretty tame compared to other books in this genre. But it works for these characters. As mentioned before, he is one of the sweetest guys/doms that I’ve ever read. He is patient and gentle with Brianna. And I forgot how young he is – when it said something about him being in his early twenties. I was shocked cause he has so much age to his action and thoughts.

Truth was a great addition to the Finding Anna series. This series is always does a number on my emotions. One minute I’m chuckling along then sad then mad as hell. Hayes has a way of tapping into my heart and making me feel right along with the characters. Have some tissue ready for this one! Truth ends on another cliff hanger. When her family gains independence unheard of for women, she’s relieved that her days of harsh punishments are over. But as her seventeenth birthday approaches—the typical age to be sold to a new master—death threats endanger her sisters. She now faces two options: run or meet society’s expectations.

For once, Cynthia isn’t going to let her older sister shield her from the problem. She’s going to prove to herself, her sisters, and society that her family isn’t a threat to their traditions. She willingly chooses to be purchased by a new master. A bold step that takes her somewhere she never thought she would go and to a man she might possibly fall in love with. With his help, she may just find a way to save her sisters while discovering how to stand up for herself. If she lives long enough.

MY THOUGHTS:

Mine to Spell is LIVE ON AMAZON ----> HERE!

The novella in this series, Mine to Tarnish, should be free on amazon during the opening week. Only this time, we are seeing the story from the adventurous sister, Cynthia. A lot of the questions that left me confused or curious at the end of You Are Mine are explained during Mine to Spell.

WHAT I LOVED:
Sisters – There have been many, many books that focus on brothers (not that I’m complaining). I like that the Mine series instead focuses on a group of sisters. Especially in a society that only cares about men, it shows strength and the power of unity when these women pull together.

Cynthia – Getting inside her head and seeing that she wasn’t a ditzy guy-crazy girl was wonderful. She not only shows a lot of strength and wisdom, but we get to see the why behind a lot of her actions. She willing sells herself as a wife in order to protect her family. And again, shows a lot of selflessness, loyalty, and compassion when she tries to help other women in her community succeed and not suffer.

World Building & Magic – Falor does an excellent job building the world Serena and Cynthia live in. It is a harsh society that is hard to stomach from the tarnished and sacrifices to the cruel warlocks. But we also get to see a more light side of magic. There is huge colorful bubbles along with room expanding spells. The magic really comes alive, even more so, in this book. I’m glad that we got a better look and explanation about their magic and how it works in this book.

Lukas – I’m a huge Zade fan. It helped that he has his alpha male moments. But, Lukas's gentle ways, fierce heart, and small smiles quickly won me over. And even gave me those heartwarming butterfly moments. The romance is not a huge part of this book. The plot and danger, and Cynthia working to better her society is the main focal point. But Lukas was a great addition and ever scene that he was in had me grinning from ear-to-ear.

I’d recommend this book (and series) to all lovers of Fantasy YA. More so, this book carries a message of equality, independence, fighting for your beliefs, and standing up for what is right. In my opinion, it would also be a great book for younger girls because it carries such strong messages.

EXCERPT:
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">“Have you made any progress?”

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">After giving my necklace a tug, I randomly pick one of the three choices I’ve narrowed it down to. At this point, there’s nothing different about any of them. All are rich warlocks offering much for possession of me but say little else. Any warlock who said anything more always said something distasteful. “Contact this one. And make sure he pays for me before you sign anything.”

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">“You’re making the decision so soon?”

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">There’s no holding back my emotions any longer. This isn’t something I want any more than she does, but there’s a part I must play. I focus all my negativity into cheer. It comes out in a squeak of giddiness. “Naturally I did, Serena. I can’t wait until I’m with my new owner. Excuse me while I go embroider a handkerchief with his name on it.”

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">The stunned look on her face makes an apology want to tumble from my lips, but there’s no saying the words. I spring from the room like I’m the happiest woman in Chardonia, not the one returning to a world full of hexes and beatings and warlocks. A world I despise.

BUY LINKS:

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">

MINE TO SPELL

Amazon - http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00JY3ZZV8
Smashwords - https://www.smashwords.com/books/view/430661
B&N - http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/mine-to-spell-janeal-falor/1119315837?ean=2940045843454

YOU ARE MINE
Amazon US - http://amzn.com/B00CLXC07A
Amazon UK - http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00CLXC07A

B&N - http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/you-are-mine-janeal-falor/1115275866?ean=2940044507333
Smashwords - https://www.smashwords.com/books/view/307844

MINE TO TARNISH
Amazon US - http://amzn.com/B00GOG9U14
Amazon UK - http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00GOG9U14

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Amazon best-selling author Janeal Falor lives in Utah with her husband and three children. It is well wrote with terrific character voices. It has a lot of kinky steamy along with a fair amount of "aww" moments. If you like your heroes very alpha and possessive, then you should definitely give this book a try.

For me, it was 3 Stars.

Personal Taste --

I've read my share of BDSM books, but this one had some scences that A) didn't settle right with me, or B) or just wasn't my thing. Don't get me wrong, this book had a rather large amount of panty melting moments. A lot of which, I was very pro- Sevastyan and his sexy, alpha self. But the club scene just felt over-the-top and not exactly "in character" for Sevastyan. There was other moments that I felt Natalie should have walked away. Sevastyan came off scary and possessive, which I can usually handle, but it was almost to the point of being toxic. It just didn't add up or work for me.

But there was some really great moments.

THE GOOD--

Natalie's father was an awesome additional character. His trust and relationship with Sevastyan opened a deeper view of both characters. And I liked seeing Sevastyan's genuine loyalty. But seeing him interact and build a relationship with Natalie was hilarious and heartwarming.

Sevastyan's Warm Side. When he was being sweet to Natalie, I melted into a puddle on the floor. Knowing parts of his past and his profession, it warmed me to see him act so caring and compassionate.

Natalie being relatable. Being in my twenties, I found Natalie's: grad school life, friends, G.N.O, job crunch, curiosity about her father, and voice all believable. And loved her and her best friend's motto of : ABC -- Always Be Crazier. It had me cracking up.

The plot was adventurous and fast paced. The setting shifts a lot and the drama seemed to always be on simmer. Add in all the sexual tension, and this book was not lacking in keeping my attention.

Even though there was moments that weren't for me, it was still a fast-paced, steamy, laugh out loud funny, emotional and heartbreaking read. This story is anything but conventional, but raw and possessive.

*Thanks to NetGalley and Gallery Books for providing this copy in exchange for an honest review.

View all my reviews

Posted with Blogsy
Jennahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16248676055912623718noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-954850228127239275.post-30422374745116174762014-04-22T14:04:00.001-07:002014-08-01T18:43:58.745-07:00Book Review: Never Been Kissed by Molly O'Keefe

Quick Recap

Ashley Montgomery wanting to escape her family hold and name, ventures off to use her money and resources in Africa. And just to be plain Ashley. But when she and her friend are captured by Somali pirates, it's not her name that saves her. But someone from her past.

When Ashely's brother reaches out to Brody, he drops everything and flies to Africa. It has been ten years since he was the Montgomery bodyguard and he didn't leave on the best terms. Still he knows that he has to save this woman from his past.

Returning her to the states and seeing her condition, he doesn't think twice about hiding her away from her overbearing, political oriented family when she asks. Taking her to his small home town in Bishop, AK he helps her fight the demons of her abduction while she helps him face the threads of his home life

My Thoughts

One reason I loved this book so much was because I related a lot to Ashley. Loved seeing her strength and honesty shine through after all she had suffered. On top of that, her ability to hold on to some of her snark and all around stubbornness made for some laugh out loud moments. She's a great character, not only for these qualities, but because she doesn't bounce right back. Still feeling flawed and scared from the capture, she holes up in the small apartment to recover. Only with the man that broke her heart ten years ago and who doesn't take the hint to leave her alone.

Brody was a complex character. I loved his badass exterior, but even more loved moments when he showed his tender side to Ashley. It was sweet to see him care for her and try to coax her out of her funk. Badass with a dash of sweet = perfect hero. The more he opened up, the more I loved his character. Him being back home, opened a whole other emotion filled door -- having to face his brother and dad again. Loved learning about his past and family and what made him act the way he did.

Sean (Brody's brother) was a lot of fun and added some great humor to book. And I appreciated that we got Sean's story in this book. I thought for sure that I was going to have wait and grab a copy of his book to see what happens. Instead, it was a nice surprise to see the author write chapters from his POV and to see his own conclusion. Though I loved staying with Brody and Ashley, it added some layers to see Sean's side of the story.

The beginning especially was quick paced. Enjoyed every single minute of seeing macho Brody care for Ashley. The romance and sexual tension was sizzling between them. The writing flowed well and the characters voices were perfect. I will definitely be trying another Molly O'Keefe book soon.

Great plot line, characters, and romance. 5 Stars

Highly Recommend.

5- Loved - It - Stars

Love a good biker and MC book. And I couldn't wait to get my hands on KA's version and the wonderful Tack. Starting from Mystery Man (and hot Hawk), I've slowly worked my way through this series. As a still KA newbie, it has been an awesome, hot-alpha male, adventurous ride. Each guy won me over individual, but Tack has stuck out in my head since book one. And Tyra and his story, did not disappoint.

Quick Summary

Tyra needs out of her drama filled life. So when she quits her job, she searches for a fast job turnaround. That lands her as the office secretary at the MC Chaos and Ride Body Shop compound. Only a few days before she starts, she attends a Chaos party with her best friend. And she meets Tack -- the president of the club -- and her heart, hormones, and tequila carry her to his bed. Tack is charming, fun, and gorgeous, and Tyra thinks she may have found her dream man. Until the next morning, he quickly kicks her out of bed.

When she faces her hurt feelings and anger, and bravely shows up to her job, Tack flips out when he discovers she is the same girl from the party. Not only does he tell her that he doesn't mix his business and pleasure, but he declares she's fired. Annoyed, beyond angry, and in desperate need of a job, Tyra throws Tack some classic KA attitude and says she's staying. And since Tack is not used to women standing up to him, he becomes intrigued. And so begins a delicious game of cat and mouse, as the two fight through their feelings, lives, and drama that seems to always be brewing at a motorcycle club.

My Thoughts

Like I said earlier, loved Tack. He was alpha badass to the core. Not afraid to speak his mind to his boys, Tyra, or even Tyra's family. Add some hot tattoos, leather jacket, and a harley and we've the perfect bad boy. But I loved that we got to peel back some of the layers, and see Tack for a kind hearted person. And meet his kids, Rush and Tabby, while seeing him in parent mode was golden. He lost his temper a lot, but he was passionate about his club, family, and Tyra. Loved him!

Tyra was a strong character. She annoyed me at points and wasn't my favorite KA heroine, but only because she was so strong willed. I respected the heck out of her for sticking to her guns on some things. Even if this is what caused my frustration. I like a character with backbone. And Tyra definitely had that and stubbornness in spades. But she really won me over in one scene (spoiler -->) When she maced that punk for hurting Tab, and bitch slapped him around(<---end spoiler), I was grinning like crazy, calling her a maniac, and screaming go Tyra go.

There was good dose of action, that started off pretty quick, and I was beyond absorbed into those chapters. The romance, the tension, the wooing, the back-and-forth, between Tyra and Tack was equally as good. Motorcycle Man ended abruptly in my opinion without a lot of instant closure. It felt choppy, especially after all the emotion and action. All I can say is I'm so thankful for the epilogue. And MM was a great wrap up to the series. Especially jumping to the previous MC POVs (something that I usually hate, but it worked for this book) for a few pages and getting a last glimpse into their lives

This series is a huge recommend -- if excessive pet names don't bother you -- and you want a good taste of action with your adult romances. Loved every guy, heroine, and book. Tack is definitely up there, but my favorite (but just barely, I do believe) is still Mitch. *sigh* If you've not tried the Dream Man series, you gotta meet these four and their feisty women.

If she wins, she'll win a "cure" for her sick brother. Only everybody in the race -- across the jungle, desert, ocean, & mountains -- are contending for someone ill in their family.

Willing to do anything to help her older brother, Tella instantly knows she has to try and win the race. Not knowing anything about the background, reason behind it, or if the promised cure is even real, she sets off towards the starting point.

To help in the race, each of the members receive a pandora. Most of the members see the pandora as a tool, Tella can't help but name/connect with hers.

As she journey throughs the race, Tella quickly forms a group of friends and allies. But soon the race becomes more dangerous than she could ever imagine.

My thoughts
Even though the survival aspect of this book is similar to some other books, two things set this book a part. First, the pandoras give the story a whole fresh outlook. And I really enjoyed meeting each pandora and seeing what their different "talent" included. More than that, it was nice to see that it wasn't the two main love interest against the world. It was a group of people traveling though the race. Each of them competing for a different family member. Additionally, the setting is one that I've yet to read. In my opinion, this book was fast paced, interesting, and very original.

Speaking of the main love interest, Guy brought some clarity about the race to Tella and yet added another layer. He was a survivor with an awesome skill set, and like any good hero had his secrets. The other characters were just as likable, especially Harper, Jaxon, and Olivia.

Tella grows a lot through the book. At times she can be annoying, but I appreciate how she doesn't come with some crazy skill, power, or bravery. She is just an average teenager trying to save her brother. And adapts and learns.

If you like your books with lots of action and adventure, you gotta give Fire & Flood a try. Warning though, even though I felt satisfied with the ending, it ends on a bit of a cliffhanger. Book II is looking to be fantastic though! Can't wait.

Thanks to Scholastic Press and NetGalley for providing this copy in exchange for an honest review.

My Thoughts: If you've read my freakout review of book one, you know that Slave made me an emotional, confused, crazy wreck. Need didn't have quite the same effect on me, because I'm a little more familiar with this genre now. However, that's not to say that Need didn't deliver, because Need delivered in a huge --yet-- different way.

The highlight of this book was two things: 1) seeing Stephen and Brianna push slowly towards growing their relationship, 2) and seeing Brianna adjust and embrace her freedom.

Stephen is one of the most patient and gentle characters that I've ever read, especially when dealing with Brianna and her fears. And though Brianna has improved a lot, she is still deeply broken and scared. He works hard to help her readjust to society, pushing her some, but also knowing her limits. More than that, seeing him introduce her to a 'real' loving relationships was moving. Like make my heartmelt in a puddle sweet. He makes her talk through her fears and builds her trust. This book steps up the sexual moments from the first, but it wasn't anything over the top. Instead, Stephen goes at the perfect pace with Brianna and it just made me love him all the more.

Brianna still has a ways to go, but she does grow a lot throughout Need. She becomes more comfortable with herself and with Stephen. It warmed my heart when she would go to him, or approach him with questions/concerns -- she was pushing past her fears into trust. We get more references to Brianna's past, which aren't overly detailed -- thank God, I don't think I could handle that -- but still show some harsh abuse. It makes my heart hurt to read about the details. And I feel very protective over her as a character. Which of course, makes her triumphs and growths all the better.

The only thing that didn't set right with me was one punishment scene. It wasn't necessarily harsh, but it mad me extremely angry with Stephen's character. Minor Spoiler ---> The texting him every hour didn't really bother me. However, the making her sleep on the floor just didn't seem beneficial. It felt overbearing, and like she was "below" him. It just didnt set well me.<---End Spoiler But Brianna becoming more comfortable with Stephen and with being around him as a result made me quickly move past my irritation with Stephen.

Need is a quick, emotional read. Like the first book, it does end on a cliffy, but I felt overall happy with the general outcome of this book. It stirs up some deep emotions and represents the genre with great characters, twist, and a lovely plot build. Besides Stephen is one of he sweetest doms (but still has his alpha moments) that I've ever read, you don't wanna miss out on that :)
