Book Review: Obsidian (Lux #1) by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Obsidian (Lux #1) by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Starting over sucks.
When we moved to West Virginia right before my senior year, I'd pretty much resigned myself to thick accents, dodgy internet access, and a whole lot of boring.... until I spotted my hot neighbor, with his looming height and eerie green eyes. Things were looking up.
And then he opened his mouth.
Daemon is infuriating. Arrogant. Stab-worthy. We do not get along. At all. But when a stranger attacks me and Daemon literally freezes time with a wave of his hand, well, something...unexpected happens.

The hot alien living next door marks me.
You heard me. Alien. Turns out Daemon and his sister have a galaxy of enemies wanting to steal their abilities, and Daemon's touch has me lit up like the Vegas Strip. The only way I'm getting out of this alive is by sticking close to Daemon until my alien mojo fades.

If I don't kill him first, that is.

Everybody Loves It -- but Aliens? Really?

I never thought I'd love a book about Aliens. And when this book first started becoming big, I put it off for that exact reason. In my mind, I was all: give me wizards, werewolves, and vampires OR give me death. Actually I was just imagining way too many three headed, slimy aliens (too much Scooby-Doo as a kid, I guess)

But after hearing some great reviews and knowing most of my bookish friends loved it (and Daemon) -- I picked it up.

No big ET phone home moments in this. Actually these aliens are nothing like the ones I pictured in my head. Instead they are border line super models with cool powers.

The Plot --

Kat moves into a new town with her mom. Only this West Virginia town is nothing like her old home in Florida; it is not as hot weather wise, but it is smoking hot when it comes to her next door neighbor Daemon (and his twin sister Dee, and all the other aliens that are running around).

Of course, she doesn't know they are aliens, and she is trying to figure out why all this weird stuff is happening (and why they hate her). Throw in some bad guys -- and we have a quick paced, action filled story with some budding romance (and a lot of sexual tension). It builds well and hooks you from the start.

A new take on an forbidden love paranormal style.

Daemon the king of the jerks.

Okay, ladies...don't freak out. He kinda annoyed me -- like a lot. And I couldn't really understand why everyone LOVED him. He is your typical bad boy, and I Iove that he cares for his sister, but he is just plain mean.

I finally saw some redeeming qualities in him, that kinda helped me lean more towards Daemon. But he really won me over at the school dance. Simply put, he was dapper and classy. And I loved it (and his green eyes)!

Katy is fierce.

Finally, a girl heroine with some backbone. JLA has created a real winner here. I love that she sticks up for herself and will call Daemon out on all of his crap. And best of all, even though she is attracted to her neighbor, she resists the instalove bologna.

And then there is the whole pasta lunch room thing -- winner in my book.

Bonus -- Katy is a book blogger like most of us. #relatable

Final Thoughts:

I am excited to see Daemon act (hopefully) more like a gentlemen at least to Kat in the next books. | What the heck happened back there? | Minor Spoiler here (highlight) --> And I am kinda hoping that Dawson isn't actually dead

And if you haven't tried this book yet, do so soon because it is a quick, enjoyable read with a snarky male lead and an awesome, fierce female heroine.

  3. Fabulous review! I was hesitant about this book as well, but am so glad I gave it a chance. Daemon definitely improves in the later books in the series though still has enough arrogant moments to keep readers guessing. And, yes, the pasta lunch scene is one of my favorites. Thanks for sharing!

  4. Great review. I'm not sure I liked Obsidian enough to continue the series, though! But we'll see.

  5. YAY I'm so glad you read this! one of my absolute FAVE series! Daemon is awesome and I love him so. Yes, he's a huge jerk in the beginning but he definitely improves and the chapters from his POV show a lot more too! (They're in the back of the paperbacks, not sure which ones you have) I hope you enjoy onyx! =D Also, there's a novella, Shadows, that's Dawson's story if you wanted to check that out sometime.
