Book Review: Will Grayson, Will Grayson

Will Grayson, Will Grayson by John Green and David Levithan

One cold night, in a most unlikely corner of Chicago, two teens—both named Will Grayson—are about to cross paths. As their worlds collide and intertwine, the Will Graysons find their lives going in new and unexpected directions, building toward romantic turns-of-heart and the epic production of history’s most fabulous high school musical.

Will Grayson, Will Grayson was anything but what I expected. Actually, I didn't know what to expect from two great authors (Green & Levithan)...and I was still surprised.

The start of the book is a little bit -- slow? Hmmm..negative may be a better word. Both Will Graysons are having a rough (slightly angsty) teenage life. AKA -- high school.

But don't let this stop you -- hang in there and you will experience a raw, emotional story about friendship, love, and loyalty. Also (and this is the part that caught me by surprise -- but was overall well written) a lot about homesexuality & how it is dealt within the lives of teens. And OH--a pretty hilarious musical number which I was curious how the authors would pull off, but did stupendously.

The Graysons-- They were awesome. At first, I didn't really care for Levithan's grayson a bit. He was just so angry and sad and mean at the beginning that I didn't like him. But by the end, he had won me over. So, I ended up enjoying both Will Graysons equally.

Tiny Cooper was hilarious and amazingly written by both authors. I loved how bold and outspoken he is -- and how he countered so many stereotypes.

Other -- This book is definitely for older teens and those who are not easily offended. It has some crude parts that I thought were a bit much. But nothing really explicit. And there is a LOT of language and cussing. But in that way, it made the world more real, because they were teenage boys being teenage boys.

And of course, homesexuality is a big theme throughout.

It was great read that kept building and building to an amazing last chapter (and line). I enjoyed watching the characters grow more than any other part. Whoever decided to put Green & Levithan together -- made a wise combo.

This book is raw and freakin' hilarious at times -- and really says a lot about friendship and loyalty.

  1. What is up with this book lately? I keep seeing it around. It is like there is this renewed interest and I am feeling out of the loop. I have heard wonderful things about both of the authors and have yet to read either one of their work.
Although I don't read a lot of YA, I enjoy it from time to time and this sounds like it is for an older crowd. Thank you for your review.

  2. This sounds pretty awesome. Thanks for the review! I love how you formatted it.The Graysons sound pretty awesome, and I admit that the fact they both have the same name intrigues me. It sounds funny, and if I can get past the beginning, I think I'll love it. Once again, thanks for the review and for pointing me to the book!
